Missions

Welcome to the Southwest District Missions page.  Has your church participated in a mission project that you would like to share with us?  We know that the churches in our district participate in a variety of mission projects and would like to take the opportunity to highlight those ministries.  Please send via an email attachment a picture or two as well as a description of the project.  Please keep your description to 100 words or less.  If you have questions regarding how best to get us that information, just email us or give us a call.

2010 Honduras Mission Project

Posted by Susan 7-27-2010

Royal Heights UMC is continuing their grassroots mission to the very poor in rural Honduras, as they work to collect clothing, shoes, tools, and kitchenware for a shipment in September.  The most immediate need is for children’s summer clothing of all sizes and adult summer clothing in small and medium sizes.  There is also a special effort this year to collect new children’s shoes, shorts and tee’s for boys and girls, and underwear for boys and girls. Shoes are a prerequisite for children to attend school and make a real difference in reducing their vulnerability to disease and infections.

Additional needs include single bed mattresses for the adult education center, which starts full time classes this February, as well as computers and televisions (including the old analog sets).

One effective way our district churches have supported this mission is the “one Sunday mission project.”  This is a simple way to focus on helping the poor in Honduras, without distracting efforts from other church missions and programs.  It’s a two step effort—on one Sunday church members are told about the mission and what is needed.  Large heavy duty trash bags are handed out at the end of worship and people are encouraged to bring them back full the next Sunday.  One the “collection day,” Royal Heights will provide a trailer or bring their moving van so that bags can be dropped off in the parking lot.

Other needs include a 4 wheel “gator” with dump bed to work the organic coffee farm which supports the school, a heavy duty table saw and other woodshop equipment, portable generators, and hand tools for weeding and working the coffee plantation.

Royal Heights also supports a 1 day “mission emersion,” which is a great way for youth groups or adult Sunday school classes to get involved in packing and collecting items for the mission effort.
